The emerald is one of the 4 gemstones with the diamond, ruby and saphir. The intensity of its color, specific to the emerald, is due to a combination of two naturals elements : the chrome and the vanadium.
The emerald naturally provided with inclusions. It is extremely rare to find emeralds without any inclusions. Those impurities are in fact really little fractures and inclusions who gets into the gem during its creation. But, conversely to the diamond, it give to the gem its own identity.
Indeed, it is not surprising if the gemologist are using prestigious words to talk about it, such as les jardins, French name for a garden. Some combination of inclusions are mostly wanted by collectors. A majority of the specialist consider those jardins as a proof of authenticity. But, even if those jardin are part of the identity of the gem, it is important to make sure that there is not too much of them in the emerald. If it is the case, the emerald would get too cloudy and fragile, wich would have a direct impact on its value.
A treatment is use to make the defaults of the emerald lighter, or to make the emerald stronger. But, if some of those treatments are accepted by the industry, some others aren’t. It is important to know that more than 90% of the emeralds are treated. The unique treatment allowed is the one using fine natural oil, like the cedar’s oil. Colorless and transparent, those oils delete the inclusions and enhance the intensity of the color. It is also use to fix the little cracks inside the gem. Those specific treatments are accepted by the professionals and has no negative impact on the value of the emerald.
But it is not the same thing for the treatments based on synthetic resin. The resin is beyond the simple fulfill of cracks. It is hiding the inclusions and doping the color, wich is not allowed. It is commun to see those treatment used for cheap gem in order to make them look more beautiful than they are. But the use of those treatments for emeralds is absolutely prohibited in the industry. Before to buy an emerald, it is really important to make sure about the nature of the treatment used on the gemstone your want.
