The emerald,
a symbol

The emerald belong to the Beryls family. It is one of the 4 gemstones with the diamond, ruby and saphir. Etymologically, its name come from the greek « Smaragdus », inspired by the Persian « Zamarat », with means « hearthstone ».

Its green color, with rich and various reflections, has been the roots of numerous myth and believes. Symbol of birth and rebirth, the emerald is tied to the notions of renewal, spring and hope. Some say it has relaxing virtues and it is a source of intellectual, physical and emotional harmonisation. Today, emerald is a really trendy gem in the jewelry industry.

An eternal value

We believe that the first emerald’s mines has been exploited during the Antic Egypt time. Extracted from mines located along the Red Sea, that run out of ressources since then, those precious gemstones were extracted in order to decorate the pharos jewelry. Emerlad’s mines has also been exploited in Asia, particularly in Pakistan. The discovery of America by the Spaniards allowed the Spanish to bring back to Europe huge amount of gemstones, especially the Colombian’s emeralds.

Because of its esthetic particularity, emerald is hard to value. On the market, its price can wave between 500 and 10 000 euros per carat. The most importants criteria to value an emerald are the carats, its color, shape and origin. In order to make sure to buy an emerald for an honest price, it is advisable to ask for a certificate of authenticity from a well known gemological institute.
